We made it to 100 episodes! We're sharing 10(ish) things we have learned over the last 3 years of podcasting and almost 10 years of helping new gardeners plant native plants through the Bloom Box program. Some are funny, some are more real than we would like, but they all boil down to nuance— gardening is rarely a black and white, one right way activity. We've learned to trust our instincts and not be afraid to try new things (even if we kill a plant or two along the way).
- Site prep is important!
- Solarizing may not be the best options.
- Raised bed prep tips.
- Weeds can be personal, different gardens will have different weed issues.
- Tips for dealing with dandelions.
- Leaving the leaves does not look the same in every yard.
- Spring cleanup is nuanced, not one size fits all.
- Creating habitat in the garden is relatively easy, protecting habitat throughout urban spaces is challenging.
- Not all plants fit in the same spacing.
- Plants we no longer recommend to beginners.
- A garden is never finished.
Our plants of the week:
- Bald Cypress
- Agave death blooms
