Prairie Garden Walk: Native Landscaping Tour
Join Bob Henrickson, host of How’s it Growin’ radio program and horticulturist for the Nebraska Statewide Arboretum on a PRAIRIE GARDEN WALK to talk native gardening in a relaxed, fun, social atmosphere. We will have tours of three different and unique prairie-style landscape gardens in Lincoln. You can share your passion for prairie plants and help highlight their ecological value to our community. We will showcase the different prairie plants and talk about how they manage the gardens. Come to learn more about native plants, what they look like, the benefits of using them and how to incorporate these important plants into your home or business landscape.
• 9:00-9:45 Pioneers Park Nature Center—3201 S. Coddington Ave.
Please join us at the Prairie Building in the Pioneers Park Nature Center located at the west end of Pioneers Park, Staff and volunteers will be on site to talk about the native prairie plantings surrounding the building and what goes into their care and cultivation of this wild landscaping.
• 10:00-10:45 Beattie Elementary—1901 Calvert St.
Explore the beautiful outdoor classroom, including a raised vegetable garden, prairie garden, and pollinator garden. The tour will be led by tireless volunteer and plant lover Karen Creswell!
• 11:00-noon Assurity Life Building—2000 Q St
The tour will meet near the public parking lot off of 21st & P St on the SE corner of the Assurity Life Building. This tour will highlight the native Nebraska-style landscape that surrounds the campus and also nearby Union Plaza. Horticulturist Dan Moore from Kinghorn Gardens will be our guide to talk about how they manage the site.
• Noon- Picnic Lunch at Union Plaza
The tour will conclude with a potluck picnic lunch at Union Plaza. Pack your lunch, bring a dish to share and join us as we celebrate National Pollinator Week with trivia questions and plant prizes.
